Scientists at a U.S. weapons laboratory say they have trained bees
to sniff out explosives in a project they say could have far-reaching
applications for U.S. homeland security and the Iraq war.
はちが爆薬などの武器を嗅ぎ分ける（見つけ出す）能力を持
ち、イラク戦やアメリカ国内でも、その効果を発揮できるだろう
と研究者が語っています。
Researchers at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New
Mexico said they trained honeybees to stick out their proboscis --
the tube they use to feed on nectar -- when they smell explosives in
anything from cars and roadside bombs to belts similar to those
used by suicide bombers.
stick out は
come up or forward if a part of something sticks out, it comes out further than the rest of a surface or comes out through a hole.

これだけの意味があるのですが、この文章では、proboscis（ミツバチの舌）をstick out するのですから、
put sth out
to deliberately make part of your body come forward or out from the rest of your body
の意味で、舌を出したり引っ込めたりする感じの意味ですね。
とにかくその舌で道ばたの爆発物などを見つける（舌を使うので、
嗅ぎ分けるはちょっと不適切ですね）のですね。
犬よりすごいのかもしれません。味覚がすごいのでしょうか？

ダイナマイト、C-4プラスチック爆弾など、訓練したミツバチが探
し出すといっています。
ところで、麻薬犬って空港で見かけますけれど、マリファナ
を吸っている人が横にいただけで、鞄に臭いが染み付いているこ
とがあります。そういう時も、嗅ぎ分けるそうで、とんだとばっ
ちりにあったという話はわりと良く聞きます。
だからスーツケースはプラスチックタイプがいいのかもしれません。ちょっと重いですけれどね。

shoe box, and could be used to sniff out explosives in airports,
roadside security checks, or even placed in robot bomb disposal equipment.
